E, C, X or N?
Nokia needs to put its entire portfolio to the test. Since the market entry of the iPhone, the business at Nokia is no longer so round, the costs run out of control and the earnings shrink.Even if Nokia still has a high market share, the Finns have with their products the equivalent of Internet Explorer in the mobile phone world, more can not the market share, only shrink.If I look in the acquaintance circle the smart phones, then in the fewest cases still the name Nokia to read-Apple, HTC and Blackberry are the dominant brands. Also in the midrange level Nokia is on the retreat: on the one hand, because the share of these models shrinks, on the other, because also Samsung, LG and Co in the market reindruck. On the cheap market, Huawei and ZTE are ready, Nokia is getting more and more under pressure. A first step, at least with service with the not really good smartphones to upgrade, was the free navigation in the form of the Ovi maps.
This step certainly did not happen voluntarily, because Google had announced a few months before free navigation for its smartphones . A further step from Nokia was the announcement on the premium models to the operating system MeeGo and Symbian for the midrange models to use. The series 40 OS is implemented on the beginner models, there is no multitasking and little functionality. The series 30-OS in Nokia’s Billighandys, on the other hand, is completely canceled with ZTE smartphone.
The naming convention at Nokia has been a four-digit number, from “1” (the simplest models) to “8”, the premium models and “9”, the business series like the legendary Communicator. Some time ago Nokia had renamed the smartphones with “N” and two digits, the business series got an “E” and two digits, the rest of the number name convention remained the same. Here Nokia has hanged to the model names a “Classic” or an “i”, to communicate further distinctions in the name. Soon, Nokia revises the naming convention again, as can be seen even on the example of the Nokia C5-00.
The breakdown of the categories is as follows:
E = E-Series = Business
C = C-Series = Community
X = X-Series = Entertainment
N = N-Series = Mobile Computing
Followed by the letters, there will be a number, such as the C5-00. Behind the hyphen is called the generation. For example, the C5-00 is in the first (zero) generation this year, next year the next generation could follow the next generation and would be C5-01. So Nokia escapes the double and confusing name usage, because a Nokia 3210 is currently available twice. The higher the number behind the letter, the better, the more expensive is the corresponding model. The upcoming N8 corresponds, for example, to the current Nokia N97.
With the streamlined product portfolio and increased service, Nokia is struggling to create a turnaround and re-energize its customers for the Finnish brand. The question is whether this can still succeed, because the youth who had previously bought everything a Nokia name plate, is no longer so fixed on the brand. Here, the other brands such as LG or Samsung have already conquered a place with nice and cheap smartphones. Nokia is trying to counteract innovative products, but the product development cycles are too long. If Nokia announces something new, then it can be assumed that it will be outdated again in a few months, when it has finally appeared, because the competition has passed in width times length.
