History of Alamance County, North Carolina

Alamance County, North Carolina is located in the north-central region of the state, and has a population of approximately 160,000 people. The county was formed in 1849 from parts of Orange and Guilford Counties, and was named after Great Alamance Creek which runs through it.

The area that is now Alamance County had long been inhabited by Native American tribes including the Occaneechi, Saura, Tutelo, and Catawba. Europeans began settling in the area during the mid-18th century, and many towns were established around this time. The first county seat was established at Graham in 1851.

During the Civil War, Alamance County saw heavy fighting between Confederate and Union forces. The Battle of Alamance was fought on May 16th 1864 at Graham Courthouse between Union troops led by General William T. Sherman and Confederate troops led by General Wade Hampton III. Although Hampton’s troops won the battle they were eventually forced to retreat due to Sherman’s superior numbers. In addition to this battle there were several skirmishes throughout the county during this period including a skirmish at Haw River Bridge on April 16th 1865 which resulted in a Confederate victory.

In 1901, the first cotton mill opened in Burlington which marked the beginning of a major industrialization period for Alamance County as more mills opened up over time providing employment opportunities for many area residents. By 1910 Burlington had become one of North Carolina’s largest cities with over 8,000 people living there making it an important center for business and industry within the state as well as nationally.

The Great Depression brought economic hardship to many families throughout Alamance County leading many to migrate away from their homes looking for better opportunities elsewhere such as in large cities like New York or Chicago or even overseas countries like Canada or Mexico. After World War II however things began to improve economically with new businesses opening up allowing more people to find work locally again which helped boost both economic activity as well as population growth within Alamance County.

Today, Alamance County remains an important agricultural center producing corn, wheat, soybeans, tobacco, cotton, poultry, eggs, cattle, hogs, turkeys among other goods. It also continues to be a major hub for manufacturing with companies such as LabCorp having headquarters located there. In addition, it has become a popular tourist destination due its proximity to several popular attractions such as Elon University , Haw River State Park and Mayodan Town Park among others.
