The Graduate Record Examination (GRE, see more acronyms on AbbreviationFinder.org) is the entrance exam to graduate programs in the areas of Sciences and Humanities required by many universities in the United States, Canada and some educational institutions in the European Union. In fact, to study a Master or Postgraduate degree not related to the areas of Law, Business or Medicine, it is usual to request the GRE exam. What is the GRE?

The GRE is made up of three parts:

The first section of the exam is the Analytical Writing portion.

The main objective of this section is to assess your ability to analyze and defend complex ideas, build and evaluate arguments, and have a focused and coherent discussion on an academic topic. The structure of this part includes 2 sections, the first “Analyze an issue” and the second “Analyze an Argument”, each section has a maximum duration of 30min.

The second section of the GRE is Verbal Reasoning.

The purpose of this section is to know your abilities to evaluate and understand written material, synthesizing information from it, analyzing sentences, and understanding words and concepts in English. It is made up of two blocks of 20 questions each and with a duration of 30 minutes per block of questions.

The last section of the GRE is Quantitative Reasoning.

This will measure your basic math skills and your ability to understand elementary math concepts in four areas: arithmetic, geometry, algebra, and statistics. This section includes 2 blocks of 20 questions each and 35 minutes to solve each block.

GRE duration

Completing the GRE will take a total of three hours and forty-five minutes, with 6 sections and a 10-minute break after the third section.

GRE scores

On the GRE, the Quantitative Reasoning and Verbal Reasoning sections are measured on a scale between 130-170 in 1-point increments. The Analytical Writing section is measured from 0-6 points in half-point increments.

If you have a different approach to business and are interested in taking the GRE, a good preparation is important to be able to successfully pass it and achieve the necessary score to be admitted to the school of your choice, however, it should be mentioned that if you do not pass it successfully the first time, you can try again, since the GRE can be presented every 21 days, and up to five times a year.
